Sardinian Muscatel is a variety of grape which has ancient
origins in Trexenta. According to tradition vine-growers jealously guarded
a few rows of muscatel in their vineyards, from which, with separate
vinification, they produced the precious muscadeddu. It
was the dessert wine which was proudly presented to friends and relatives
at feasts and sometimes to the local parish priest, who was pleased
to promote it to binu e missa (the wine used during
mass).
Simieri wine bears the name of an ancient vine growing area of Senorbì,
where there is a hill dominated by a Nuraghe steeped in legend and history,
and it is todays alternative to the traditional muscadeddu.
The muscatel is harvested in September when the grapes are almost completely
dried. Some years the technicians actually prolong the drying by cutting
the bunches and leaving them in the vineyard to absorb the suns
rays for about a week. The sugar content reaches very high levels and
the result is a sweet, balanced wine, with a strong, natural flavour.
It is best served chilled, about 10°C, with sweets made from almonds.
Alternatively it can be enjoyed alone as a wine for contemplation.
Alcohol content: 14%Vol.
